Featuring 24 characters from the DC Comics universe, Injustice comes from NetherRealm Studios, formed from what used to be Midway Games, which created the Mortal Kombat games. That DNA provides the structure for this energetic fighting game that pits both villains and heroes against each other in one-on-one matches.

Womp had potential. A video game designed so that gamers could easily participate with nongamers, it was played by pushing a single button. The students who created it as part of the master of digital media program at Vancouver’s Centre for Digital Media called it “the second most fun thing you can do on a couch”.

The Gerri Sinclair Award is a $2,000 cash prize given to the most innovative project to come out of the masters of digital media program each year. It was endowed by a $50,000 donation from Microsoft at the urging of Vancouver’s Don Mattrick, who runs Microsoft’s interactive-entertainment business and is an important figure in the video-game industry.

Video games with the number three in the title were the big winners at the 2013 Canadian Videogame Awards.

Last year’s CVAs were notable for the number of maple leaf trophies picked up by independent developers, but among the games nominated this year were big sequels from major publishers, including Assassin’s Creed III, Far Cry 3, and Mass Effect 3.

It’s difficult to keep a secret, especially when what’s being kept under wraps has the potential to change people’s lives. Case in point: Vancouver’s Next Level Games.

For some four years, the studio has been working with Nintendo on the 3DS game Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, which was released on March 24. But until Nintendo was ready to announce that the game was in development—which happened at E3 in 2011—it was not to be discussed with anyone.
