On a wall in United Front Games’ office are five vibrant pictures featuring a young Asian man running and fighting. Jeff O’Connell explained that the images were created within the first few months of development on a new, open-world video game set in Hong Kong. The game, now called Sleeping Dogs, was released on August 14, and the story of how it came to be finished and published is one of perseverance and tenacity. Read more
This open-world action title, developed in Vancouver by United Front Games and released on August 14, is as close as you’ll come to starring in your own Hong Kong action film. From the very beginning you’ll expect Chow Yun-fat to step into the scene at any moment. Instead, it’s Will Yun Lee who stars in the game as protagonist Wei Shen, and he’s pitch perfect in the role. Vancouver’s Edison Chen is equally great as Wei’s childhood friend and sidekick; Lucy Liu and Tom Wilkinson also star. Read more
What could have been the video-game industry’s trial of the decade ended up being more of a fizzle. Proceedings of the legal spat—the relevant players included publishers Activision and Electronic Arts, game designers Jason West and Vince Zampella, and employees of Infinity Ward—were postponed, then cancelled as each of the various lawsuits was settled. Nobody admitted fault and terms of the deals were not disclosed, but the high-profile nature of the disputes indicates just how nasty this business can get. Read more
