Published today at the Globe & Mail’s online technology section is my look at how video games are at the forefront of the new storytelling, in which worlds/universes/mythologies are being illuminated using a variety of media.

Where Tolkien exposed Middle Earth using novels, for example, the story of Richard Riddick is told in movies, animated films, and video games. Halo and Mass Effect are using games, novels, comics, and even ARGs.

While Grand Theft Auto IV was released on Tuesday, the story of how Electronic Arts has been trying to get the franchise – and publisher Rockstar Games – under its umbrella has been going on since February.
