On Monday, 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed, a clever and creative inventor, brought to school a digital clock to show his engineering teacher.
He was arrested. Because teachers and the school principal said it looked like a bomb.
Which it doesn’t, of course. It looks like a clock.
Even though police knew that it wasn’t a bomb, they threatened to charge him with making a hoax bomb. They’ve wisely decided not to.
And the clever Mohamed has been able to turn the horrific incident around.
Here’s just a sample of the support he’s received in the past couple of days:
- An anonymous donor has paid for Ahmed to attend NASA’s Space Camp
- President Obama has invited him to visit the White House
- He’s been invited to intern at Twitter
- Mark Zuckerberg has invited him to visit Facebook
- He’s been invited to tour MIT by a leading astrophysicist; Chanda Prescod-Weinstein called him a “creative, independent thinker” and said he is her “ideal student”
I’m calling this one a win. #IStandWithAhmed.
