Introducing kids to video games

In this week’s edition of the Georgia Straight, I talk to two Vancouver game developers about how they introduced their children to video games.

With two young ones of my own, though, I was interested to know how they went about introducing their children to the medium.

Some parents agonize over whether to allow their children to play video games. For parents who work in Vancouver’s video-game industry, however, the question isn’t “Will I let my kids play video games?” but rather “When?”

I also take a look at some of the games that my 3-year-old daughter has been playing, and what seems to be appealing about them.

Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch have become the introductory video-game platforms of choice for many parents. Always at the ready, these devices are quick to get into the hands of a screaming toddler. The best platform in such situations is the one you have with you.
